A New Era for the Indian Premier League

The landscape of professional cricket is on the verge of a potential transformation. In a significant development for the sport, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal has revealed that the governing council is actively evaluating the feasibility of expanding the Indian Premier League. As the tournament continues to grow in stature and complexity, the BCCI is exploring an alternative structure that could see the competition held in two separate windows throughout the calendar year.

The Challenges of Expansion

The IPL 2026 season has reached its thrilling business end, with heavyweights like Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad competing for the title. The tournament, which commenced on March 28 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, is scheduled to conclude on May 31. However, the current format, which features 74 matches, is already pushing the logistical limits of the March-May window.

Looking ahead, the BCCI aims to expand the tournament to accommodate 94 games, ensuring each of the ten franchises plays an equal number of home and away matches. This ambition comes with a major hurdle: the climate. Playing throughout the Indian summer, particularly into June, poses significant health risks for players and makes the spectator experience incredibly uncomfortable due to extreme heat and humidity.

Proposed Two-Window Structure

To address these climatic challenges while satisfying the appetite for more cricket, the governing council is considering a split-window approach. Arun Dhumal shared insights into this strategy, suggesting that the first phase of the tournament could be preponed to February, with the second half taking place in the September-October window.

This scheduling shift would not only protect athletes from the peak of the Indian summer but also align the tournament with the festive season, which is highly advantageous from an advertising perspective. Dhumal emphasized that the September-October period is arguably the best time for the tournament to capture viewer interest just before Diwali.

Consultation with Broadcasters and Global Stakeholders

The final decision regarding a structural overhaul is not one the BCCI intends to take in isolation. According to Dhumal, extensive discussions with broadcasters and other cricketing boards are essential. The IPL is a central pillar of the global cricket economy, and any changes to its schedule will inevitably impact other domestic leagues and international commitments. The BCCI is committed to finding a solution that balances the commercial interests of the IPL with the integrity of the global game.

“We need to sit across and speak to the broadcaster for their opinion,” Dhumal noted. “We have to do what is best for the game because IPL does not impact only the BCCI, it impacts all other cricket boards and players who play across the globe.”-

Current Stakes in IPL 2026

While discussions about the future are ongoing, the focus remains on the current season. Royal Challengers Bengaluru have already secured their path to the final after a dominant performance against the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1. The excitement continues in the Eliminator, where the Rajasthan Royals are set to face the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The victor of that high-stakes encounter will move on to Qualifier 2 to battle the Gujarat Titans for the final spot. The closing matches of this competitive season are set to be held at the Mullanpur Stadium, with the grand final taking place at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

As the tournament reaches its climax, the debate over its future structure signals that the IPL is far from reaching its full potential, with the BCCI clearly positioning itself to manage the world’s most lucrative T20 league with long-term sustainability in mind.
