Rishabh Pant’s Future in Doubt as LSG Plans Major IPL Reset
A Season to Forget for Lucknow
The Indian Premier League is a league defined by its volatility, but few teams have experienced the turbulent descent witnessed by the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). After a seventh-place finish in the 2025 season, expectations were high that the team would find its rhythm. Instead, the 2026 campaign proved to be an absolute nightmare, with the side finishing at the bottom of the points table, securing a measly 8 points. The atmosphere surrounding the franchise has now shifted from hope to intense scrutiny, with the leadership of Rishabh Pant firmly in the crosshairs.
The Numbers Behind the Struggle
When Rishabh Pant joined the Lucknow setup in 2025, the vision was clear: build a championship-contending team around a dynamic leader. However, the reality of the last two seasons has been starkly different. Under Pant’s stewardship, LSG managed to win just 10 matches while suffering 18 defeats. The frustration is not limited to team results alone; Pant’s personal contributions with the bat have also dipped below the elite standards he previously established. Over the two-year span, he managed 581 runs at a strike rate of 135.74—numbers that simply do not reflect his potential.
Tom Moody Weighs In
The turning point for the franchise appeared to be the crushing seven-wicket loss to the Punjab Kings on May 23. Following that encounter, LSG’s global director of cricket, Tom Moody, provided a candid assessment of the situation. He acknowledged that the team failed to live up to its own standards and confirmed that a total review of the franchise’s structure is imminent.
Addressing the media, Moody noted: “From a captaincy point of view, you know, he’s found it challenging, obviously, and the results reflect that. And you do have to wonder whether that is a pressure that is reflected in his performance with the bat.” Moody further added that while the management is not looking to scapegoat individuals, the leadership structure is under serious review. “When it comes to the leadership of the franchise, it’s certainly something that we’ll be giving some very serious consideration to, you know, what it looks like in the future. It certainly looks like we’re needing to consider a reset.”
Internal Friction and Future Outlook
The issues within the camp appear to go deeper than just on-field performance. Rishabh Pant himself hinted at an overly complex decision-making process, citing that too many individuals being involved in leadership decisions created confusion throughout the 2026 campaign. This lack of clarity was often visible during matches, where tactical errors and erratic fielding placements cost the team dearly.
Head coach Justin Langer has also expressed his disappointment, though he remains hesitant to pin the blame on any single entity. The sentiment from the top brass is that the entire organization shares responsibility for the failure. As Tom Moody emphasized, “I think we’re all responsible. I don’t think it’s a time to point the finger at any individual. We all need time to reflect on it in a calm manner, but there are certain things that we do need to address.”
What Lies Ahead for LSG?
As the dust settles on IPL 2026, the Lucknow Super Giants find themselves at a critical crossroads. The mandate for a “reset” suggests that no player or staff member is immune to the upcoming changes. Fans and analysts alike are now left to speculate whether the franchise will stick with the current core or undertake a radical transformation in the lead-up to the next season. With the IPL being a cutthroat environment, the message from the LSG management is clear: the status quo is no longer acceptable, and change is inevitable.
